Archiving/Archivers 19th Feburary 2017

Widget not in any sidebars

Guys from Serbia, please understand me, why I choose to write IT articles in English. But I just decided to do so, and I think it is the right way. Writing in Serbian is something I like, but when you try to help people, Serbian IT community is just one small group, considering how big is world IT community, so please, shut up there.

Ok, archiving…

I’m going to suggest you, no… “Google” is going to suggest us, current leaders in that area, and I’ll make a comment on 10, than I’ll give you my choice, winner. So let’s start.

On first quick search, this is what i have:

  1. 7Zip
  2. PeaZip
  3. B1 Free Archiver
  4. IZArc
  5. TUGZip
  6. Bandzip
  7. HaoZip
  8. FreeArc
  9. Zipeg
  10. Bitser

Idea is to back on this subject every few and then, and check status. I’m repeating, this is not list, arranged by some score, it is simply what  “Google” gave back on search ‘arhiver’ for me. And on that list, by my surprise, “WinRar”, that I’m using. So let`s start from end.

Bitser

Bitser in action (compressing)

As developers saying it can extract from following formats: ZIP, ZIPX, 7Z, RAR, ISO, VHD, MSI, GZIP, BZIP2, TAR, CPIO, DEB, DMG, LZH, LZMA, LZMA2, PPMd, NSIS, RPM, UDF, WIM, XAR, CBR, CBZ, XZ, Z. 26 formats, but I`m sure, those extensions are not so important for us. It should be just fine, with ZIP and RAR for everyday use. In other hand it is very handy not to receive message, from time to time, this format is not recognizable by you favorite app. So this is just plus. Disapointment, because there is no Windows 10 in list of supported platforms. They are saying: “Supports Windows 7, 8, 2008, Vista, 2003, XP for both 32-bit and 64-bit versions”. For installation you need .NET 4, and that can be painful in some older version. So I went to download section, and I’m confused. There it is stated it is supporting “Windows 10”. And I’m more confused, beside their product “Bitser”, they are offering other products “Zipware”, same version, same almost everything. Download is less then 3 MB. Installation went smoothly.

Screenshot and link to “YouTube”

So that’s it for now. I’m going to test later speed of packing and unpacking small and big files, from simple ZIP format and number of formats supported.

Zipeg

Author is Leo Kuznetsov. Website is poor, which is ok for free software. Formats supported:  .zip, .rar, .7z, .tar, .gz, .tgz, .bzip2, .iso, .cbr, .cbz  .arj, .lha .lzh, .cpio, .rpm, .chm, .z, .war, .ear. 19 formats supported, but this i just what is needed by most of us. Very good “FAQ” page with video. Blank “Support” page. “Download” is not working, so one less for main test.

FreeArc

It is also free application, so please don`t discourage developers, please, but it cant be on our test, because there is x64 version lacking. Date of version is 2010, so project is probably dead, oh “Google” why are you doing this to me?

HaoZip

HaoZip interface

Besides shits on main page, “Forever Free” (uuuuu!), and “50 formats” (uuuuuu!), there is no other pages. I went for x64 version “English”, and antivirus pop-up. Download is 4.6 MB.Installation went smoothly.

Bandizip : All-In-One Free Zip Archiver

8 compression supported and 32 extraction formats. Great. Website looks ok. Last version is from December 2016, so it is something, someone is working on. Download is around 4.7 MB, fast one. Installation went great. There is support on many languages. There is detailed explanation with screenshots, so this is one big plus.

TUGZip

TUGZip expirience

You can archive in 11 different formats: 7-ZIP, BH, BZ2, CAB, JAR, LHA (LZH), SQX, TAR, TGZ, YZ1 and ZIP and unpack from 25 formats: ZIP, 7-ZIP, A, ACE, ARC, ARJ, BH, BZ2, CAB, CPIO, DEB, GCA, GZ, IMP, JAR, LHA (LZH), LIB, RAR, RPM, SQX, TAR, TGZ, TBZ, TAZ, YZ1 and ZOO. We are going to check that, man! Great advantage is, as they are stating: you can extract or browse disk images in following formats: BIN, C2D, IMG, ISO and NRG. That is very useful, great advantage. There is support on many languages. You can send email to author.

IZArc

Why Izarc, well they are saying it can extract from “many” formats: supporting many archive formats like: 7-ZIP, A, ACE, ARC, ARJ, B64, BH, BIN, BZ2, BZA, C2D, CAB, CDI, CPIO, DEB, ENC, GCA, GZ, GZA, HA, IMG, ISO, JAR, LHA, LIB, LZH, MDF, MBF, MIM, NRG, PAK, PDI, PK3, RAR, RPM, TAR, TAZ, TBZ, TGZ, TZ, UUE, WAR, XPI, XXE, YZ1, Z, ZIP, ZOO. 48, and that is a lot! Oh, as I see, they had some problems in they history, as of version 4.2 in news section, they are saying “NO MORE ADWARE. IZARC INSTALLER IS COMPLETELY ADWARE FREE”, and that is pretty tough for author to say. At least they are honest. And that version is from 2015, November, so it is not so new at all. 5 MB file is downloaded fast. Installation went well, a lot of languages supported, version for iOS and screenshot section on website. Great!

B1 Free Archiver

Version for Windows, MacOS, Linux and for Android (just to remind us where are we are living, portable one).

Installation is online, it downloads, small file which is just initiation and afterwards it goes online and install software. If you don`t have internet, you are screwed.

Installation is not so fast, but when you install it it looks like seperate OS. On Windows 10 x64, it was asking for reboot (what the heck!)

Interface is modern, it looks great. Sincerely, I’m still trying to find catch here, because I can’t believe it is 100% free. I’m expecting every moment something to pop-up and ask money. Catalina Group Ltd developed this piece of software. There is an affiliate program and there is a catch. Be careful during installation, because it is offering toolbar! But you can easy uninstall it, of course. It should be able to extract and compress to most supported software, so we will test it.

PeaZip

PaeZip packing

It is Open Source under OSI. Supported for Windows x86 and x64, portable and Linux, as wel as BSD. 7.2 MB for x64. Download and installation, very fast. 12 supported formats for compression: 7z, FreeArc’s arc/wrc, sfx (7z and arc), bz2, gz, paq/lpaq/zpaq, pea, quad/balz/bcm, split, tar, upx, wim, zip. 124 supported formats for unpacking: 7z,  Google Android’s apk, bz, bz2, bzip2, tbz2, tbz, gz, gzip, tgz, tpz, tar, zip, zipx, z01, smzip, arj, cab, chm, chi, chq, chw, hxs, hxi, hxr, hxq, hxw, lit, cpio, deb, lzh, lha, rar, r01, 00, rpm, z, taz, tz, iso, Java (jar, ear, war), pet, pup, pak, pk3, pk4, slp, [Content], xpi, wim, u3p, lzma86, lzma, udf, xar, Apple’s dmg, hfs, part1, split, swm, tpz, kmz, xz, txz, vhd, mslz, apm, mbr, fat, ntfs, exe, dll, sys, msi, msp, Open Office / Libre Office (ods, ots, odm, oth, oxt, odb, odf, odg, otg, odp, otp, odt, ott), gnm, Microsoft Office (doc, dot, xls, xlt, ppt, pps, pot, docx, dotx, xlsx, xltx), Flash (swf, flv), quad, balz, bcm, zpaq, paq8f, paq8jd, paq8l, paq8o, lpaq1, lpaq5, lpaq8, ace, arc, wrc, 001, pea, cbz, cbr, cba, cb7, cbt (and more…) Very nice. Let`s see speed in next chapter.

7Zip

Giant. All this years on market and still on top. So let`s see if it is just old fame or maybe not.

Downloading and installation great. Only 1.3 MB file, installing in second. Only pop-up is for folder where you want 7zip files to be copied.

Website is old fashioned, but everything is clear here. Formats for packing / unpacking: 7z, XZ, BZIP2, GZIP, TAR, ZIP and WIM, 7 (is it why they call it 7Zip?). 31 unpacking only: AR, ARJ, CAB, CHM, CPIO, CramFS, DMG, EXT, FAT, GPT, HFS, IHEX, ISO, LZH, LZMA, MBR, MSI, NSIS, NTFS, QCOW2, RAR, RPM, SquashFS, UDF, UEFI, VDI, VHD, VMDK, WIM, XAR and Z.

So, let’s make a table for speed testing.

For test Im using Windows 10 x64. 1.6 GB folder with lot’s of small files, and one movie 1.6 GB as large file. We are timing speed for making archive only for .ZIP, so there is a chance some of archiver are better in some other formats, but .ZIP is most common archive type this days (at least for Windows and MacOS).

So, after first round I had to eliminate 2 application: IZArc and FreeArc. IZArc was installed pretty smoothly, but I wasn’t able to start it. It started to work and after few second’s just exit. It looks too much like a bloatware. Oh, i forget to tell you, Im working on machine with good updated antivirus. Every application has unpacked it’s archive made by same application. 7Zip packed and unpacked same archive, an example.

So this is results for times:

Name Time (mm:ss:msms)
pack small files pack large file unpack small file unpack large file
7Zip 02:16:92 03:01:45 01:24:95 02:02:97
PeaZip 00:56:50 02:11:13 02:17:11 01:25:61
B1 Free Archiver 00:29:00 02:02:00 01:47:04 01:12:38
TUGZip 04:08:25 04:32:24 01:21:22 01:34:42
Bandzip 00:37:81 01:04:72 01:27:64 01:04:42
HaoZip 00:29:20 02:15:90 01:28:05 01:10:24
Bitser 00:59:46 02:15:28 01:43:32 01:15:18

For above times archivers manage to compress files to some ratio. Usually, if i have did this test, 10 years ago, compression ratios, would be almost same, this is what surprised me, very much. Some application made better, some worse ratios, but it was different.

Name Original file size Compressed file Commpression ratio
small large small large small large
7Zip 1.58 GB 1.46 GB 0.24 GB 1.44 GB 84.10% 1.36%
PeaZip 1.58 GB 1.46 GB 0.38 GB 1.46 GB 75.94% 0.00%
B1 Free Archiver 1.58 GB 1.46 GB 0.41 GB 1.46 GB 74.05% 0.00%
TUGZip 1.58 GB 1.46 GB 0.40 GB 1.46 GB 74.68% 0.00%
Bandzip 1.58 GB 1.46 GB 0.40 GB 1.46 GB 74.68% 0.00%
HaoZip 1.58 GB 1.46 GB 0.401 GB 1.45 GB 74.62% 0.68%
Bitser 1.58 GB 1.46 GB 0.388 GB 1.46 GB 75.44% 0.00%

Best compressor is “7Zip”, as expected, only “7Zip” and “HaoZip” has compressed .mp4 file, at least for few percent. In small file “7Zip” is 10% better on all of them on normal compression, but slower.

Final score:

If you want best compression use “7Zip”

If you want best time use “BandZip”

If you want best interface use “B1 Free Archiver”

I have provide you with all necessary links. So be my guest and try this software, it is safe and free.

“WinRar” is compressing small files in 00:18:51 with ratio 74.05%, 01:34:24 for large files with ratio 0.68% so even some commercial solutions are behind some free solutions.

So, now i need to uninstall all this applications. I hope everything will be ok. Yea, i don`t mind for one or two more question during uninstall, it is free software after all. So, solution I have checked speed and ratio are 100% safe one. Just watch during “B1 Free Archiver”, it might offer some nasty ‘toolbar’.

I hope I`ll have time to check another subject soon.
